Computer Troubleshootings

1.   How to repair start up problem of Microsoft Outlook 2010?

This is one of the most common problems with Microsoft Outlook 2010. Whenever this problem occurs the Microsoft Outlook 2010 comes up with an error message “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook 2010”. This error can persist even after repairing and reinstalling the software. By this time the program also cannot be started in the Safe Mode. The possible reason behind this issue may be the wrong way of Microsoft Outlook shutdown which in turn leads to a problematic navigation panel. One way of resolving the error is by running the Outlook.exe /resetnavpane command. If this method does not work then go for running the Inbox Repair tool to overcome the problem.

 2.    What is difference between OST and PST in outlook?

OST stands for Offline Storage Tables. It is an offline folder created by MS Outlook and MS Exchange to hold offline copies of whatever exists in the Exchange server. you can just call OST files as as local copy of your Exchange mailbox.
On the other hand, PST stands for Personal Storage Tables. These are also known as personal folders or personal files. It is not created by Outlook or the Exchange server. These PST files can be stored anywhere in your computer and it makes it that much easier for you to keep a backup copy of your PST files or move it from one computer to another.

3.    What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System (or Service or Server). Basically, the DNS system is the database that makes the Internet work. So, each time you browse a Web site or you send an e-mail, you’re using a domain name. For example, when you go to our Web site, the URL http://www.worldstart.com contains the domain name worldstart.com, which is all nice and easy for us to remember, but it doesn’t help your computer out at all. Your machine is set up to use something called an IP address, which is a bunch of numbers instead of the letters we’re used to seeing.

4.   What Is DHCP?: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway. DHCP allows hosts to obtain necessary TCP/IP configuration information from a DHCP server.

5.How to Configure your computer to use DHCP ?

To configure your computer to use both a DHCP obtained IP address and a statically configured IP address follow these steps:
1.      Right-click My Network Places and choose Properties.

2.      On the NIC that is (usually) labeled as Local Area Connection - right-click and choose Properties.
3.      Select TCP/IP (make sure you don't remove the check mark accidentally) and press the Properties button.

4.      Make sure you have "Obtain Automatically" selected.

5.      You can verify your settings by running ipconfig /all at a Command Prompt:

6.      Ok all the way out.

6.How to Repair Outlook PST File Easily?

Scanpst.exe is a free utility from Microsoft designed to repair corrupt or damaged Outlook PST files. You can look for a free scanpst.exe download, but that isn’t very safe as you never know what kind of file you might be getting from the Internet. And it isn’t necessary. Every version of Outlook, including XP, 2000, 2003, 2007, etc. (even the latest Microsoft Outlook 2010) includes a copy of the “Inbox Repair Tool”, which is the name for the scanpst.exe software program.

8.    How to Join Your Computer to a Domain?

1.      Logon as Administrator. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. The System Properties dialog box is displayed.
2.      On the Computer Name tab, click Change. On the Computer Name Changes dialog box, select Domain and enter the name of the domain in the text box, as shown in Figure 1 below. In this example, the computer currently named hq-res-wrk-o1 is joined to the Reskit domain.

9.  How to Verify Your Policy Settings

Windows XP ships with hundreds of policy settings that allow administrators or users to adjust many

features, such as the appearance of the Start menu, or set restrictions for features that may need to be

managed in a medium or large organization. For example, administrators may wish to restrict

Remote Assistance or set a specific skin for Windows Media™ Player.

Sometimes it’s necessary to check which policies are in effect for a given computer and user, especially in troubleshooting situations when a given policy may be overridden by another policy.
With Windows XP, users no longer need to run a command line tool to check policies on their computer. Now any user can obtain a graphical report directly from the Help and Support Center.
To check policies in effect on your computer

17.              How can use hyper terminal in Hyper for Vista and Windows 7.

Windows 7 does not include HyperTerminal like XP did but I have seen others use their HyperTerminal application from their Windows XP machine on Windows 7. I do not know the licensing implications of that, you can look into  that.
In theory, if you have a valid copy of Windows XP you can find the main HyperTerminal files  you     probably care  about in:
C:\Program                                   Files\Windows                                   NT\HYPERTRM.EXE
C:\Windows\Help\HYPERTRM.CHM
C:\Windows\Help\HYPERTRM.HLP
C:\Windows\System32\hypertrm .dll
Then create a new directory on your Windows 7 machine (maybe C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal) and copy all 4 files into that directory. The files don't have to be spread out in different directories like they                                                                                                     were         on      XP.
Make a shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal\HYPERTRM.EXE"
Use HyperTerminal as you normally would.
